What are Intelligent Hauntings?

When one thinks of the different types of hauntings intelligent hauntings are what we all think of. Thanks to all the hype of Hollywood it is the single most thought of classification. However this spiritual activity is the second most common form of haunting.

In fact activity such as this is very much a rarity in paranormal investigations. Occurring possibly (in hypothetical values) only once out of ten investigations where activity is present. This figure makes this manifestation of activity rarer than residual hauntings and means that yet again Hollywood has hyped up rare paranormal occurrences.



Characteristics of Intelligent Hauntings



This classification is presented by specific activity that sets it aside from residual. In an intelligent class the alleged spirit can and will interact with the client and investigators. It will even communicate with all afore mentioned parties commonly in the form of electronic voice phenomenon.

Characteristics of intelligent class activity are but not limited to:

  • Responsive and interactive activity


  • Household objects being moved or influenced


  • Completely Random acts of paranormal activity




    • Responsive and Interactive Activity



    As mentioned above an intelligent spirit will often try to communicate with the living. Usually this comes in the form of an EVP, however occasionally they will communicate in an audible voice. This rare phenomenon is known as “disembodied voices”.

    Intelligent spirits tend to also interact and in most cases this is with the client. Interaction is usually sporadic and quick as this requires a large amount of energy to maintain. These interactions include but are not limited to:

  • Disembodied voices


  • Touching and/ or bumping


  • Feeling of being watched


  • Full or partial apparitions


  • Feelings of dread


  • Paranoia




    • Household Objects Being Moved or Influenced



    These interactive spirits often resort to other attention grabbing activities. These activities are energy consuming and often will result in temporary cessation of paranormal activities. They include but are not limited to:

  • Knocking sounds


  • Disembodied footsteps


  • Cabinets being opened and/ or closed by themselves


  • Objects being moved or misplaced


    • Do remember all old houses make settling sounds that can explain the aforementioned sounds. A good paranormal investigator will try to recreate any anomalous sounds before giving his or her opinion. Always keep an open mind when receiving these claims.



    Random Acts of Paranormal Activity



    Unlike residual hauntings, intelligent activity will be completely random. This activity will occur at different times of the day on random days. It is even as random as stopping for long periods of time.

    As it is random we can theoretically reveal some possible triggers that can spawn an increase in activity. These theories include but are not limited to:

  • Construction or remodeling


  • New owners or residents


  • Channeling


  • High deposits of limestone


  • High deposits of quartz




    • A Classification Misunderstood



    Though this classification is more likely to occur than poltergeist or non-human it is still second to residual hauntings. Now that you are in the know and more educated on it you will be better able to identify it. Now for you intelligent hauntings will no longer be a classification misunderstood.
